House and Hospital

Further construction has begun on our future rental house so it should be fun to observe how the finishing touches progress. The available tiles were split between a speckled green and a speckled sand so we'll see what design materializes between the two. The "baby blue" basins were already purchased by the owner in Accra so I guess some of my color schemes have already been determined. One error in the builder's judgment concerns the small kitchen sink. Ideally, it should have been a double one since without hot water from the tap, it'd be nice to fill one section with water that has been heated on the stove for rinsing. Oh well, at least they can replace the faucet itself with a higher spigot so we can manage to get a pot underneath. In the next couple of weeks, we'll have to get a stove, some furniture and a few other essentials. Hopefully, the refrigerator that we brought in the container will work.
Jim continues to establish his place at the hospital and each day I am sure his contributions are taking effect. It is a slow process. While some people are very willing to learn, others are reluctant to change age-old habits. The facility, itself, has been sadly neglected for many years and truthfully, my first visit there gave me a strong incentive to try and stay healthy so I wouldn't have to return as a patient. Jim, however, goes faithfully every morning, determined to do what he can to help the Ghanaians and improve conditions. I now understand how important it was for him to accumulate all the medical equipment he could get his hands on in the U.S. before coming over.
The last few days have seemed quite a bit warmer as the rainy season is drawing to a close. I'm told the really hot months are Feb, Mar, and April, - this after the dusty Harmattan wind, which usually comes December through January. In the span of sometimes eight months, there is not one drop of rain.

Glad to hear that you finally have a house. Actually baby blue basins do go with speckled sand and green tile. Should be interesting. Jim said he was going to send me some malaria Rx. Did he forget?
11/10 is only a month away.

Hello Mrs Murphy, I am an old patient of Dr Murphy's from Harrison/Kearny area here, where you both are very much missed. There was a wonderful write up in the Observer paper this week as they interviewed your pretty daughter Beth and it was so nice and to get the blog information in it and it was so nice to see the nice photos of the family. I started going to Dr. Murphy around 1979....You tested my hearing many times through the years but Dr. Murphy would remember me best....Ethel Heymach. I had surgery by him and every time I had to go to another dr for any other reason, being away or him being away, etc....I just couldn't find an ear doctor or audiologists that I was as satisfied with as I was with both of you. I am so happy to see the work that you both are doing there in Ghana, it is wonderful. I just wanted to say hi (*>*) and I hope I'm inserting this correctly....I notice your son John jokingly saying something about teaching an old dog new tricks with doing a blog...well, that's about the way it is with me, too, SMILE....please feel free to email me at any time or anyone else that who might wish to: MYFRIENDBUNNY@YAHOO.COM'
God bless you both very richly and you will always be in my prayers.
Cordially,
Ethel Heymach

HI Cyndy and Jim,
Greetings from South Carolina...my parents Charlie and Lorraine Domnik (your former neighbors from Pleasant Place) send their love and since I read the Kearny Observer online I was so happy to hear Jim is living out his dream...I just hope it becomes your dream too!
Ken and I moved to South Carolina 13 years ago and are now the grandparents of 6 grandchildren..3 boys and 3 girls that keep us busy attending all their sporting and school events. I remember fondly the Christmas Eve parties at my parents house where I got to see your children grow up.
One of our neighbors on Pleasant Place passed away suddenly last month...Pat Maulfair, wife of Howie..the lived next door to my parents. She died of cancer in her early 60's...sad.
My parents now see Dr Sailba who took over your office in Kearny..and they are very pleased with his care. Both of them are doing well...Lorraine's knees after being replaced awhile ago, allow her to go bowling every Wednesday with her friends. Atlantic City is still their favorite place to spend our inheritance..lol..but I am happy they are so active. They will celebrate their 60th anniversary on Nov 1st!
We had a family reunion this August in wildwood NJ, My parents, Raymond, David and Diane and families joined us and we celebrated all week..it was wonderful!
Both you and Jim will be in my prayers and thoughts for the wonderful work you are both doing!
God bless you and your endeavors.

Hi Cyndy and Jim,
I thoroughly enjoy your blogs and am so glad to hear you will soon have a house of your own. Like an earlier respondent I think the colors will work just fine.
Stay well.
